Review - Scarpa Manta GSb Boot
The first collaboration between a boot and a crampon producer has created the new Manta GSb boot especially designed for use with the Grivel Air Tech GSb binding. The GSb boot/crampon configuration eliminates any doubts of compatibility, and makes it quick and easy to attach. The points configuration is well suited to alpine and winter mountaineering.

This a fantastic all-round performer which works well as a British winter boot. The new shoe's ankle design has taken from the Scarpa technical pieces and is reported to work well up to grade 3 on Scottish snow.

This has been and will continue to be the choice for my British all-round boot. Mint...

A quick crampon trial, non GSb suggests that the boot is idea for crampon use - stiff soled for support, comfortable but supportive uppers and enough flex at the ankle cuff to keep those points in contact with the snow and ice. So no worries on that front. The GSB slot, by the way, is plugged as standard, but the blank is easy to remove with a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

Without crampons, the new Mantas are, as you'd expect, quite stiff underfoot. They're still eminenty useable for walking and some people will also love the fully-stiffened sole unit for edging on scrambles. Yes, you could use them for all-round, year-long walking, but beneath the snowline, they really are overkill and you'd bettter off with a pair of lightweight approach shoes or walking boots for use below the snowline.

The other alternative from the Scarpa stable, would be the Mirage GTX which does much the same job as the Manta but weighs around 200 grammes per pair less. We suspect the Manta with its leather uppers will be more durable in the long term, but over the course of a long day, you do start to notice extra weight underfoot.

The Jorasses GSB sole is a unique development from one of the top sole manufacturers ? Vibram. A dual compound sticky rubber is used and the sole has a softer rubber at the front of the foot. The overall make up of the rest of the sole is manufactured in a unique way to create a great 4 season boot. The boot is lightweight due to this unique sole and has great shock absorption qualities.

The shoe also excels when you require the use of crampons as the sole is uniquely molded to accommodate the use of step in crampons. The system is much faster than others we have seen in getting the crampons on and off and is also much safer due to the GSB Manta boot having no protrusions to catch onto debris.

The ?last? is the foot shaped model that the boot has been crafted around. This is what will give a boot its characteristics. Scarpa develop lasts specifically for the use of each boot. The Manta GSB boot uses what is called the DL Last. It is stated by Scarpa that this last has been ?tested and proven in many of Scarpa?s best selling alpine models, this last provides a higher volume and broader fit, with exceptional all day mountain comfort, regardless of the activity.?

The Scarpa Manta Gsb Boot is ideally suited to hill, mountain and glacier walking on rugged terrain and the occasional easier alpine and Uk winter climb. Excels in winter walking, where crampons are used for extended periods. Close to a staggering 10% weight loss has been achieved by moving to the New GSB- Jorasses sole unit and pro-fiber midsole, in turn the boot has been lowered, making it more dexterous and stable underfoot. Despite the weight reduction we have been able to add a generous rubber rand, which adds protection and abrasion resistance. The Last changes to DL, as used on the Mirage, a form that has proven to be exceptionally comfortable and universal in its fitting ability.

The Manta GSB walking boot is built for 4 season treks in a variety of terrains. Scarpa have again delivered a great boot that meets the needs of many hikers giving comfort and practicality. The technology is leading edge and made with the customer in mind. With the new lightweight version of the boot due to the unique sole development the Manta Scarpa GSB boot should definitely be tested out.

wearing them around the house for hours a day early on to start the break in process, going on short hikes before really taking them out on long hikes. For what it's worth, given my foot construction Danner size 15D boots are a much better fit.

The manufacturing quality is excellent - be aware, the boots squeak. I called Lowa technical support and was told that the black material connecting the tongue to the boot is synthetic (which was surprising given the cost of the boot) and to use some boot paste on it.
