Review - Rab Ascent Down Jacket
This is a great looking Alpine piece from
Rab
. Constructed from a hardwearing
Pertex Endurance
shell, the stitch through baffle construction holds 330g of fill power 650 down. It is equally suitable as an insulating layer below a shell or as a winter jacket. It comes supplied with its own stuff sack and has a number of great features such as zipped handwarmer pockets and a narrow baffle construction in areas requiring greatest stability for the down. A removeable hood also makes this piece ideal for a number of situations and activities.
You'd have to go a long way to find a jacket so well designed and built for this sort of price. Well worth having with you when the temperatures start dipping below zero.
The gent's
Ascent
looks pretty damn good, but the ladies version is really well cut, and looks a treat. Value all round, and a '
Rab
' to boot. Highly recommended for British or Alpine winters.

General comments: The Rab Summit is an excellent coat of good pedigree and made in the UK too. Generously cut to fit over other layers, super cosy with excellent lofting. Always a popular coat at any hut, crag or meet and with good reason.
Pros: Chunky YKK zips easy to operate with cold hands or gloves on. Thicker pertex beads well in showers, prevents feathers escaping and the anti wear shoulders and elbows add durability to the necessary areas. Detachable hood has ample insulation and a shapable wire peak, the coat also has ample length in the arms and a dropped back these features really add to the walking sleeping bag feel. Two large other zipped pockets and three inner pockets provide ample storage for hands and equipment. This jacket is ideally suited for throwing on when getting out of the car, hanging around campsite or for keeping warm between routes at the crag not forgetting of course; celebratory trips to the pub.
Cons: This jacket is more bulky to pack away than some so takes more valuable space in the pack for long walk ins to camp / climb. The neck tightener can be irritaing at times and the lining in the sleeves has a tendancy to sag out of the cuffs. The cut of the jacket is generous around the mid-rift which can cause a bit of space if wearing just one layer underneath.

The Rab Summit Batura is probably the ultimate foul weather down jacket. The outer fabric is fully waterproof seam sealed Pertex Shield including the down filled fixed hood.
Insulation is provided by 325 Grams of 96% Goose down held securely in place by narrow box wall construction, for ultimate warmth even the zip baffle is down filled.

Down's one of Rab's biggest strengths and they've been making some interesting tweaks to existing jackets as well as bringing in a couple of neat new ones including a cracking-looking ultra-lightweight top in several different versions.
One thing they're keen to point out is that all Rab down clothing now uses their own hand-selected European goose down - no Chinese down and no cheaper duck down, it's all pulled out of geese - the down is shipped to either Alfreton or Rab's suppliers in the Far East for stuffing. Additionally all the fabrics used for the down clothing are Pertex materials for high performance.
One jacket that's had some tweaks is the ?220 Summit Jacket - for starters the outer fabric is slightly lighter this year, but also stronger, being 30-denier Pertex Endurance rather than the older 50-denier version. The main change is to the shoulder area where down filling is overlaid with an area of quilted synthetic insulation. Two reasons: first synthetic filling works better when compressed, as with a pack. Second, sharp objects, like shoulder bones, tend to cut through the down leaving a cold spot. The Peak Smock and the women's Summit Jacket get the same changes.

The Rab Ascent Jacket Range features a strong Pertex Endurance 50D outer shell with stitch-through baffle construction. The fill is 300g of superior quality goose down with a fill power of 650+ to produce a high quality down jacket suitable for all but the most extreme conditions. The price, smooth looks and well thought out features also makes this the choice for winter urban wear. The jacket features a full-length YKK zip (with internal anti-snag down-filled baffle) for easy cooling, and a scooped back for lumber warmth. The Women's version also features narrow baffles which stabilise down across the shoulders making it less bulky in appearance.
Other features include two external pockets, secure zipped internal pocket, and adjustable drawcord hem with one-handed toggle adjustment. Supplied with detachable down filled hood and stuff sac. Total weight: 730g (25oz).

The construction of the jacket is stitched-through ? if you could see a cross-section of the jacket it would look like a series of circles stacked on each other. This is the easiest and hence cheapest way to make down jackets but has the disadvantage that with stitching going through the jacket it makes an un-insulated area. The Finnish outdoor magazine Retki did a test of insulated jackets in a recent edition and one of their studies for the review was taking pictures of the jackets on test with a thermal imaging camera whilst they were worn in a freezer room. What was very obvious from these thermal images were which jackets were a stitched-through construction and which were not: warmer colours were clearly visible along the lines of stitching on the sewn-through jackets, and not there on the box-walled jackets. Box-walled jackets in cross-section look (unsurprisingly!) like a series of boxes stacked on each other, with no stitching through.
